Sega Mega Drive (Genesis) II, 16-BIT

Sega's Master System trailed the NES during the 8-bit era but Sega got the jump on Nintendo with their Mega Drive (known as Genesis in the U.S.) and won a major share of the 16-bit console market. It was Nintendos turn to play catch-up with their SNES console in the Fourth Generation of Video Games.

Sega had an unlikely hero in the form of a blue hedgehog called Sonic who became their Mascot in response to Nintendo's Plumber, Mario. Unlike Mario, who began life as the hero in Nintendo's Donkey Kong Arcade game, Sonic was created originally for Sega's console games. He did eventually make an appearance in Japanese arcades as well as comic books, tv cartoons and even feature films becoming an icon in popular culture.

Pictured here is the Sega Mega Drive II with two 3-button controllers, using the TV RF output converter although Composite, SVideo or RGB plus stereo audio outputs are also available using various cables.
