Sony Playstation 1, model number SCPH-7002
The Playstation is a CD based, 32 bit Fifth Generation console released by Sony in 1995. Development began in partnership with Nintendo as an add-on for their SNES console but when this alliance failed Sony decided to complete the product as a standalone unit and enter the console market themselves.
Although visually similar, there were a number of hardware revisions and some changes to available connections from the original (PAL) release model SCPH-1002. This is the SCPH-7002, produced from 1998. The '02' suffix denotes PAL format models.
One major weakness of earlier revisions was the use of plastic rails in the CD optical mechanism, which wore quickly and were prone to sticking or jamming. A well known workaround of the day was to operate the unit on its side or upside down which reduced the friction between the worn surfaces.
In later models the weakness was corrected, diecast alloy rails used in the Optical unit instead. It is possible to upgrade the earlier models, aftermarket parts are readily available and inexpensive.
In 2000, Sony revised the unit completely, making it more compact and less expensive and that model became the PSone. Sony also released their next generation model, the Playstation 2, the same year
